Everyone loves a good adventure, the triumphs and the challenges make for one heck of a story. All great movies, tv shows, and books have an adventure. So why not a wedding day! There is so much to see of this world and the possibilities are endless. Jenny and Caleb took the idea of having a Sedona adventure wedding and ran with it.
Jenny is an avid hiker and Caleb has become one too. They have even done the epic Grand Canyon hike over multiple days. So when it came to their wedding day in Sedona their biggest priority was to do a First Look on the instagram famous Devil’s Bridge. She had been dreaming of the idea for a long time. During our first video chat several months ago they were worried that most photographers wouldn’t want to do it. However, we are always up for an adventure so to be able to photograph this Sedona wedding was very exciting. It just took a bit of planning, creativity, and knowing the priorities.
We traveled down the rough trail in our borrowed off-road truck; Caleb sat in the back seat with a blindfold. We all joked that if you didn’t know what was going on this could look terrible, like we kidnapped him LOL. But he was a champ and rode out the bumpy ride without seeing what was coming next. He was quite grateful when we finally parked at the trailhead. He promptly got out of the truck, put the blindfold around his neck, and then quickly headed up the trail in anticipation for what was to come.
As we paired off at the trailhead the winds kicked up, the trees bending in the gusts and that Sedona red dust flew everywhere. We were all worried about how difficult it would make walking along the skinny part of Devil’s Bridge. At its narrowest point is only about 6 feet wide, not much room for error. Fortunately, none of us have a real fear of heights. But when we reached the top, the winds had died down a bit, or perhaps it was the hill that we were so conveniently tucked behind that blocked the wind; either way we were very thankful.
It’s a unique sight to see a groom heading up a trail with a Jos. A Banks suit bag thrown over a shoulder. Almost every passerby had their interest piqued and asked what was going on, or the occasional joke of saying “the dry cleaner is back the other way”. Most brides wouldn’t dare to tightly roll up their dress and shove it in an REI backpack, but that is not how Jenny is. This was about the adventure and not perfection. Something we should all keep in mind during our own lives.
This may just be the most public “first look” we have ever done as we typically keep them as private as possible. This time though we had an excited audience, of close to 30 hikers, waiting across the canyon to see this unique “first look”. Jenny made her way down the bridge towards Caleb and as he turned to see his bride the whole crowd cheered in celebration. An event we are sure these hikers were not expecting to see on a Thursday afternoon in Sedona.
Their ensuing wedding came later that day at the aptly named Red Agave Adventure Resort. Jenny and her mom put many hours of work into customizing all of the details for this day. Together, they coordinated everything for the wedding from the Flirty Desert Engagement Session to the dinosaur ring box, the invitations to the shoes…it all tied together perfectly. The wedding colors were in her engagement dress and even the desert landscape was pictured in the invitations. It all came together beautifully. Family and friends came from all over the country to celebrate these two. Everyone had fond things to say about how the two of them bring out the best in each other.
We love it when our couples think outside the box and are confident in it. Jenny and Caleb had their heart set on this and we are so happy that we were able to make it work for them. Their whole motto and running joke is “We did it!!!”, and you two did it!!! Congratulations Jenny and Caleb on your Sedona adventure wedding.
